I enjoyed the first two InCryptid books, and while the third wasn't bad, I lost interest in the series. But  book 5 picks back up with my favorite ninja ballroom dancer, so I might give this another go. Is it bad that I'm skipping book 4?

Author: Seanan Mcguire
Release Date: March 1, 2016

Verity Price is back on the West Coast and getting back into the swing of the family business: cryptozoology. Her ballroom dance career is behind her—or so she thinks. When Verity gets the call from the producers of Dance or Die, the reality show she almost won several years before, she finds the lure impossible to resist, and she and Dominic are off to L.A. for one last shot at the big time.

Of course, nothing is that simple. When two contestants turn up dead, Verity will need every ally she can find with the investigation, without blowing her cover…

I frequently have students ask me for books like Harry Potter. Most the time they're looking for a book with that mix of real world and magic or a magical boarding school story. The rest of the time they're really just want Rowling to write book #8 for the series. (Same here kid, same here.) I'm hoping this is something will fill the gap while they wait.

You had me at nerdy best friends. this looks like a sweet LGBTQ about life and growth. I'm going to be actively hunting this one down.

Author: C.B. Lee
Release Date: January 31, 2017

Can friendship, Star Trek, drama club, and a whole lot of coffee get two nerdy best friends through the beginning of their senior year of high school?

Meg and Linus are best friends bound by a shared love of school, a coffee obsession, and being queer. It’s not always easy to be the nerdy lesbian or gay kid in a suburban town. But they have each other. And a few Star Trek boxed sets. They're pretty happy.

But then Sophia, Meg’s longtime girlfriend, breaks up with Meg. Linus starts tutoring the totally dreamy new kid, Danny—and Meg thinks setting them up is the perfect project to distract herself from her own heartbreak. But Linus isn’t so sure Danny even likes guys, and maybe Sophia isn't quite as out of the picture as Meg thought she was. . . .

From crowdsourced young adult imprint Swoon Reads comes Meg & Linus by Hanna Nowinski, a fun friendship story about two quirky teens who must learn to get out of their comfort zones and take risks—even if that means joining the drama club, making new friends, and learning how to stand on your own.

This one makes me a little nervous, I don't do well with kids dealing with loss. Or sad things with kids. I cry. (Even looking at the cover of Pink and Say chokes me up.) I'm hoping that this one doesn't make me cry too much.

Author: Emma Trevayne
Release Date: February 7, 2017

A girl must stop the Boogeyman living in her home from stealing her family’s warmest memories in this haunting, atmospheric novel from the author of Flights and Chimes and Mysterious Times and The Accidental Afterlife of Thomas Marsden.

When her distant aunt and uncle die, Amelia Howling is forced to move into their home when they leave her parents in charge of their children. Her parents assure her that it will be like having a grand adventure with three new siblings, but Amelia is not convinced. Luckily, the house is large, filled with nooks and crannies perfect for hiding from her cousins.

But even with all the nooks and crannies, the rumbling and crumbling rooms are more sinister than they seem. The house was built years ago by a creature named Horatio, and he’s been waiting for the perfect human inhabitant: Amelia. Horatio has the power to travel through time and memories, and lures Amelia into his world. The memories of children, he told her, were the best, and Amelia agreed—her cousins were full of good memories. Until she noticed that once she and Horatio visited a memory, it was gone forever. And she had been stealing the good memories of her cousins and their parents without even noticing!

Horrified and scared, Amelia lets her cousins in on her secret, and asks them for help. Together, they must race through time to recover their minds and break the perfect clockwork of the evil Calendar House.

What have you had your eye on but just haven't picked up yet? I'm kind of excited about picking up the InCryptid series again, but I think I'll get this from the library first.
