Monthly features post every Wednesday, some are silly and others are genre reviews.
Wishlist Wednesday spotlights some of the books I really want to read but haven't actually made it to my embarrassingly large TBR pile yet. (So embarrassingly large that Mr. Inkling accuses me of trying to build a book fort.)
Let's not even pretend that we don't judge books by their cover. We all do it. I even have a few books that I didn't like but I keep because they are so pretty on my shelves. As a school librarian I have to keep in mind that half the battle of getting a kid to try a book is the cover. Gorgeous covers are easier to push then books with ugly covers. I have even paid more money for hardback copies or have ordered older editions off of Amazon in order to get the best looking cover. So here I let covers battle it out and you get to vote.
This month matched up the US and Indonesian covers of P.S. I Like You. Of course the Indonesian Cover was the winner.

You might be surprised to know that the cookbook section is one of the most popular in elementary libraries. Some kids cooked with their families, but generally they just loved looking at the pictures. I've had lots of after school discussions with parents who've tried recipes, loved the ugly cookbooks, found others to be very time consuming or the results were bland. Since I enjoy cooking, and have run into my fair share of disappointing cookbooks, I thought this monthly feature might be fun.
My very first cookbook review quickly became a family favorite. Princess Godzilla especially enjoyed it.
My Sweet Kitchen is a great cookbook, but if you prefer to look at food pics rather than bake, I highly recommend the Lomelino's Instagram account.
I love comic books and I highlight adult-ish comics once a month. This month I reviewed Wonder Woman: Her Greatest Battles, DC's special collection to pump up readers for the new movie.
I was super excited about the Love-A-Thon and then my son brought home the zombie plague and spread it to the whole family. I didn't get to participate as much as I had wanted to, but I'll definitely do it again next year. The hosts had created a cool list of mini challenges that participants got about two weeks in advance. There was enough time to put together posts and schedule them in advance, I really liked that. Unfortunately I just wasn't feeling very creative and only participated in two of the challenges. I enjoyed going to other blogs and seeing the cool ways they completed the challenges. Hopefully I'll be a little more inspired next year.
What were your favorite books this month? Have you read City of Saints & Thieves, was I the only one stressed out during the whole thing? (And I absolutely loved it!) If you participated in the love-a-thon, what was your favorite part?

It looks like you had a wonderful month! I'll have to check My Sweet Kitchen out. My 3 year old has quite the sweet tooth so he'd probably love all those goodies.
ReplyDeleteI'm considering making the no bake cheesecake again next week. It's so yummy and I kinda miss it.
DeleteI love the idea of your Cover vs. Cover feature---so fun!!

Thanks! I have these discussions with students and library staff, might as well bring it to the blog. :)
DeleteThe Paper Magician looks like a really interesting read! And that Cover vs. Cover feature looks fun too. :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like you enjoyed a fabulous month.
I did have a good month! I've really enjoyed book blogging so far. I want to be active in the community but it's a bit hard making sure I don't bite off more than I can chew.
